Frequently Asked Questions

We are committed to continue our efforts in making our studio a safe, inspiring space for our students. As of June 1st, these additional precautions will be in place as we continue our in-store shopping experience and sewing classes:

  • Masks are optional for students, shoppers, and staff.
  • Restrict classroom access to ONLY students and staff. Parents may drop off and pick up at the front or rear door. Access to the rear door through the back alley.
  • Continue to teach proper surface sanitization of the stations, sewing equipment, and general areas.
  • All students will be assigned their own sewing machine and designated sewing space.
  • If your child shows signs or symptoms of cold or flu please do not bring them to class. If we suspect your child is sick or not feeling well, we will remove them from class and contact you to pick up your child immediately.

We appreciate your patience and support of these measures in this unprecedented situation, as safeguarding our entire La Movida community continues to be our top priority.

You will learn how to use a sewing machine and machine sewing techniques.

  • How to choose appropriate fabrics for your designs and how to read and layout a pattern.
  • How to alter a pattern for proper fit.
  • Hand stitching, seam finishes
  • And design students might create flat drawings, illustrations, and spec sheets. Do costing analysis and learn about industry standards, pattern drafting and production.

Sewing classes have a maximum of 8 students per instructor. Workshops can have up to 12 spots available depending on the project with a second instructor assisting. We require a minimum of 4 students for each class.

If you have signed up for a class or course and then can’t make it, you may transfer your tuition to another class up until 10 days before the start date. This gives us enough time to contact a waiting list person so we can offer them your spot.
To transfer, call or email us, or feel free to stop by. There is a $15 administration fee for any transfer. All class transfers are based on availability.

Adult Classes: La Movida Fashion Design Academy DOES NOT offer make up classes or refunds for adults who miss their scheduled classes.

Youth Classes: LMFDA will do our best to accommodate a missed class with an alternative class. This will be based on availability and must be made up within 14 days of the missed class. All makeup classes are $15. LMFDA can accommodate up to two makeup classes per session.

Fashion Design Classes: Missed design classes can only be made up based on availability in another design class. All makeup classes are $15. LMFDA can accommodate up to two makeup classes per session.

We do not want to cancel good classes but if everyone waits until the day before to sign up, the class will most likely be cancelled. If a class is cancelled all students will be notified in advance by email, and full refunds will be issued. Students choosing to transfer from a canceled class can do so free of charge.

You can pay by cash, cheque, Visa, Mastercard both online and in the studio. We are now offering e-transfer as a payment option

When registering online you have the option to skip the credit card payment and  use e-transfer instead. Juts call us to confirm the transaction. Remember the enrollment wont be confirmed until the transaction has been completed.

Yes, sort of. You can purchase a fabric package from us for each project – we have everything you need in the studio and a carefully chosen selection of fabrics. Depending on the project it will be between $10-$25 each, for fabrics and notions. This is a great price and very convenient. We will let you know before each new project how much it is going to cost and we only charge you for the fabric you are going to use – no extras like in the store!

We have researched which kinds of fabric will result in a high quality project. Sometimes the print does not work, or the fabric is too difficult or not the right weight/stretch/quality for the pattern. We have a curated selection of specialty fabrics available at the studio or for purchase that will be waiting at the studio on your first day of class. Just let us know if you would like to purchase fabric from us. You can purchase the required fabrics and sewing kit from us in the studio or online at any time. We have taken all the guess work out of shopping for fabric and want to make your introduction to sewing as painless as possible. It is not required that you purchase supplies from us, but is a service provided for your convenience.

The studio is fully equipped with 18 top of the line sewing machines, 3 sergers, 4 cutting tables, as well as a small retail for fabrics and notions. So let’s have fun and sew us what you’ve got!

Contact us if you have any suggestions, would like to be our featured artist, host a workshop or see something we don’t offer but you think we should – we are happy to arrange a class or workshop for you and your friends. Need a minimum of 4 students for each class.
