What's new in our summer camps and workshops after 11 years of hosting sewing summer camps in Vancouver, BC!

Hosting summer workshops and camps for our youth students here in Vancouver, BC has been a pillar of our sewing studio since our conception 11 years ago! It takes a lot of preparation. Our goal with all of our youth sewing classes is to create one of a kind pieces that not only look good but are in line with current trends so we always add a few new projects every year as well as bring back our most successful ones.

For our summer camps this year (2025) we’d love to share some thoughts behind this year’s new projects.

In our after school sewing program we often do some iteration of a skirt & shorts during the spring term and this year was no exception. Because of this we have had tons of requests for a skort!! The kids don’t wanna sacrifice comfort or fashion and we completely understand that.

Skorts can be quite a tricky sewing project to pattern draft and sew and we always aim to design our projects to be suitable for beginner sewers!

So for our skort summer camp this year we landed on a full fitness set. An adaptation of our biker shorts, this year’s skort can be made from all sorts of knit fabrics so the skort is super comfy and fairly simple to piece together (it’s only 3 pattern pieces)!

Laurie loved Kendrick Lamar’s outfit at this year’s halftime show and has been experimenting with all sorts of denim outfits since then. Along with our Canadian current events we of course are all on board with the Canadian made movement. With all these things happening you can see how Laurie landed on the “Canadian tuxedo” as a theme for one of our August summer camps! We have revamped our denim jacket as well as done patchwork iterations of a denim skirt and pants, so there are ample options for the kids to choose from.

We have also been bombarded with bow’s! They are everywhere in fashion right now and the kids and teens love them. Laurie made a few versions of our Sunday best button up into a bow top!! We have already run this as a spring break camp and the students in that class LOVED it so we brought it back as a summer camp as well.

Previous summer camp students may be familiar with our bucket hat. Bucket hats can be a tricky sew as they require you to match things up pretty accurately and sew lots of curves so historically it has been a hard project to make (but a rewarding one). This year we aimed to simplify the pattern to a bit more of a fun sew and line up with the summer hats we are seeing on trend. Laurie landed on this beach ball summer hat! The use of crescent shaped panels makes this a more straightforward sew.

There are lots of other summer sewing camp projects that are returning patterns but made in more current fabrics so be sure to check out our Workshops & Camps page to see what all we are getting up to this summer!
