After sewing over 60 onesies with our youth afterschool program we thought the pattern was such a big success that we worked to develop it as a full online sewing tutorial and full size range of sewing patterns.

This onesie was designed in our sewing studio to be easy to put together so that we could teach it to kids in our sewing classes. The silhouette is strongly inspired by the Japanese Kigurumi , which is often used by cosplayers as a fun way to make your favorite pokemon or animated character. Meaning that it has a big hood , a slightly oversized fit, and a dropped crotch.

The sewing process

Of course we could never leave you hanging with poor sewing instruction so we put together a full video sewing tutorial to accompany the pattern. 

Since we just spent 8 weeks teaching this project to kids and using it as a tool to teach them all their sewing skills; in our full video sewing tutorial we chalked it full of beginner sewing tips and tricks that are sure to make your sewing experience easy and teach you something new even if you have a lot of sewing experience.

In the youtube video sewing tutorial we break down every single step, from how to cut out properly, to sewing a raglan sleeve, to identifying the parts of the pattern, to understanding how to pin and hold your fabric, and even how to sew on a snap!

We carefully planned out the order of construction so this onesie sews together seamlessly and we hope it’ll be the easiest sewing tutorial for anyone to follow.

Choosing the right fabric

We suggest that you use polar fleece to make your onesie as it has a slight bit of stretch while being a stable and easy to sew fabric. Polar fleece is also insulating making it great to stay warm and cozy. 

If you are using this onesie sewing pattern as a base to make a costume, polar fleece will be awesome to sew on any decals and embellishments as it does not fray. 

It is pretty common for us to use polar fleece to make stuffed animal as well, meaning that if you are sewing together an animal onesie, it will be good to make tails and ears out of.

We carry a ton of polar fleece in a wide variety of colors, you can find these in our online fabric store and in person in our Vancouver fabric shop. 

The distributor we used is based out of Canada and we try to keep our supplies as Canadian as possible (so even though not a lot of fabric is produced in Canada we can keep our distribution Canadian).

Where to get this sewing pattern

Our onesie sewing pattern will be available to purchase in person at our Kitsilano, Vancouver, Sewing store as well as online. We offer it as a printed version and it comes in a box making it easy to store and reuse. As well, you can buy a copy shop version. So while we do not ship outside of Canada, you can purchase the copy shop version and make our onesie from anywhere.
