Deadstock fabric and Sustainability

deadstock fabric

Here at La Movida we are proud to prioritize bringing in deadstock fabric for our sewing classes and fabric shop. We mostly supply garment fabrics because we are all garment sewers and we are lucky to live in a city that is bustling with garment manufacturing and film costuming which means there is a surplus of garment fabrics.

If you have not heard of deadstock fabric, often when businesses are manufacturing they over-order the fabric that they need to account for the margin of error and often end up with a surplus of fabric. It accounts for a lot of the textile waste around the world as it is not uncommon for this fabric to be disposed of! But more recently hobby sewist and fabric shops have worked together to create a market for these otherwise unwanted materials.

Over the years that I have been here we have collaborated with various manufactures to buy their deadstock off them. We’ve gotten everything from beautiful twills in every color to leather to pure silk!

If you visit us in the studio and want a more sustainable sewing option look at our tags! We label our deadstock fabric with a green sticker.

We believe that no matter what, sewing you’re own clothes is one of the most sustainable ways to be fashionable! When you learn to sew you gain an appreciation for clothing and the skill required to make it and you learn how quality clothes are actually made. You also reduce the amount of waste as fashion companies often over produce and then throw away their leftovers. Sewing allows you to make something you love, that is quality, and that fits!

If you’re really looking for a more sustainable way to be fashionable it is also good to learn how to upcycle thrifted clothes and alter your clothes to fit you!

There are billions of clothes already in existence and they may just need a little love and creativity to fit into your wardrobe.
