Winter and fall fabrics to sew with in 2025

It’s September which means I am packing up my shorts and pulling out my sweaters and thinking about what I need to add to my wardrobe as we move into the chillier months!

Here are the things we have stocked in our sewing studio and what I would make out of them. All of these fabrics are avaliable online as we are a canadian fabric store or in person at our vancouver fabric store.

Fleece!

This fall term we brought in a ton of polar fleece as we are making animal onesies in our youth after school sewing program and needed lots of colours so every kid could make their dream animal onesie.

I’m really in love with all the colours we brought in and in previous years have made a full polar fleece pant & top set which is a staple of my winter wardrobe.

Polar fleece is great for the winter months because it is super warm and insulating. Lots of brands use it to make mid layers for skiing and other winter outdoor activities because of this.

Skii mid layer sewing inspo!

We had a lovely student named Heidi come in a couple years ago and make like 3 of this polar fleece top that she just absolutely loved so in a private lesson we helped her custom draft a pattern based off her original fav top and help her learn how to sew it so she could make as many as she wants because she loved it so much.

So needless to say if you haven’t made a polar fleece mid layer set yet you should choose your favorite colour and get on that before it is too cold.

We also used it a few years ago to make skii hoods which you could totally make using our pattern during our next sewcial.

Deadstock coat weights

Earlier this year we got a call about this manufacture that had tons of fabric but was moving away from producing clothing and was selling off their fabric for a good deal and we hoped right into the car and brought home two whole SUV loads of fabric so we could ensure we had great fabric for a good deal for our students.

We got lucky and found these super cute coat weight plaids that will make the best blanket jackets!

Sweatshirt Fleece

We have the best, softest, organic cotton sweatfleece in the studio. Last winter I made my partner some sweatpants from it and it is their favorite comfy pants. We also use it a ton for our hoodies and cargo sweatpants and they are just the comfiest things ever our students can attest to it!

If you’re looking to make a nice hoodie this winter you should definitely use our hoodie sewing pattern because it comes with a full video sewing tutorial and we have tested this pattern over the past 10 years so we know it turns out beautiful every time!

Denim & Twill

I’m so thankful that Denim is an all seasons affair. We have tons Denim & Twill stocked in every colour. Perfect for any joutfit you wanna make. I’ve been thinking a lot about Trench Coats & coveralls this year.

Here are the pattern’s I am poking my nose at:

trench coats

coveralls

Wool Knits

We have a ton of deadstock wool blend knits here at the studio and a couple years ago Laurie made this beautiful kaftan out of the fuchsia wool knit and we still have tons of it left on the bolt so I am thinking a lot about the mid layers to create with it (maybe my loved ones who skii will get a pair of long johns this winter holiday).

Flannel!

Does flannel ever go out of style? We have the best selection of flannels this year and they would make lovely button ups but I would almost threaten to go farther and make a warm wrap dress just because I love dresses so much!

What are your winter sewing plans? If you ever want to see our full selection of fabrics you can visit us in person at our vancouver fabric store to get the real idea of the feel and drape of all of these materials.

Denim has a long and rich history and is one of the most worn fabrics in the world, but for a lot of sewists we can tend to avoid it.  It is a thick and durable fabric that is mildly expensive, and is often used for very rugged clothes that require a lot of technical…
  • all about cotton gauze

In my constant search to understand how fabric and fashion has changed history I learned a bit about how integral cotton gauze was to the medical profession. The absorption was vital to bandaging people, and it’s a pretty great thing not to have your patient bleed out and to help them clot easier. Now it…

I actually wasn’t a fan of Linen when I first started sewing, I saw it as a rough fabric and I had no clue why there were so many people who preferred linen over all other fabrics.  But of course the more I learned about linens properties and the more I worked with it as…
