What to make with quilters cotton

Here at our sewing studio we use quilters cotton for way more than quilts. We love this fabric for so many reasons and we thought it was a good idea to highlight the properties of quilters cotton so you can better understand what to use it for!

Great properties of quilters cotton:

High quality quilters cotton features a fairly tight weave making it strong and fairly structured.

They feature all sorts of fun prints and patterns which can be hard to find in other fabrics. It’s also pretty easy to find color fast quilters cottons meaning they will maintain their vibrancy over time.

Cotton in general is absorbent and breathable making it not only comfortable to sleep in but comfortable to live in.

High quality quilters cotton tends to shrink about 5%, like most cotton does. So we definitely recommend prewashing it if you plan on laundering it in the dryer. But it is also important to note that heat can degrade the dyes in cotton fabric causing them to fade faster.

What could you make using quilters cotton?

While quilts are incredible pieces of art that can be so fun to make quilting cotton can be used for so much more than just quilts.

In our sewing classes we often use quilting cotton for zippered bags and pillow cases which are classic beginner sewing projects. We have also used them for keychains, lanyards, and neck ties.

In terms of clothing that you can make with quilting cotton we have used it for button up shirts, pajama pants, beach pants, blouses, and even dresses!

When using a quilters cotton for clothes I would remember that certain colors can be quite sheer so if you aren’t wearing an underlayer stay away from light colours.

About our quilters cotton

We have a wide selection of quilters cotton here at the studio and really prioritize bringing in unique and funky prints for our youth sewing classes so you’ll often find prints here that you wouldn’t see at a traditional quilt shop.

Since we use most of our quilters cotton for garment sewing we tend to bring in a heavier weight quilters that feels nice to the touch and isnt see through.

As a small business we found it really important to support Canadian distributors and now only work with Canadian fabric suppliers. While it’s hard to find fabric made in Canada this is one step towards supporting Canada.

Denim has a long and rich history and is one of the most worn fabrics in the world, but for a lot of sewists we can tend to avoid it.  It is a thick and durable fabric that is mildly expensive, and is often used for very rugged clothes that require a lot of technical…

In my constant search to understand how fabric and fashion has changed history I learned a bit about how integral cotton gauze was to the medical profession. The absorption was vital to bandaging people, and it’s a pretty great thing not to have your patient bleed out and to help them clot easier. Now it…

I actually wasn’t a fan of Linen when I first started sewing, I saw it as a rough fabric and I had no clue why there were so many people who preferred linen over all other fabrics.  But of course the more I learned about linens properties and the more I worked with it as…
