Easy & Free Sewing Patterns to Build Your Summer Wardrobe

Free summer sewing patterns that build your sewing skills

It’s hot out and I am thinking about quick summer sews to boost my wardrobe over the weekend. Of course as I am doing this it seems likely that maybe you’re struggling with the same issues.

I’m not big on the printing and taping method so now is the time to mention, all of the sewing patterns I am sharing are Free sewing patterns, but I tend to prefer to get all my patterns printed in large format. So While this isn’t sponsored, if you hate taping together patterns, The Cloth Shop does large format printing for $5.

1. Shorts

If you’re new to sewing , or if you need more shorts and a quick win. It’s pretty easy to get a free sewing pattern for shorts like this one.

It is a great way to practice sewing a variety of fabrics or customizing sewing patterns, by adding ruffles, making it longer, or experimenting with new hem or waistband types.

2. 30 flirty and thriving

I”m thinking this out of our bubble crepe, we have it in Blue, hot pink, and tan so depending on what kind of girlie you are you could go crazy with it.

I personally love our blue though, I might even go a step further and extend the length of the dress with some slits to make it feel more 70’s

3. Shirring

Laurie lately has been experimenting with Shirring and it has me pretty inspired, because once you figure out how to shirr , it takes care of the shaping of the dress.

So i’ve been considering experimenting with this sewing tutorial to learn a new skill

We have a full rainbow of gingham for such a good price and they are 100% cotton

4. Skorts!

A while ago I went on a skort sewing rampage as I got super in to going to the gym and I really wanted cute gym clothes but didn’t wanna spend the hundreds of dollars to have the cute clothes. This is one of the rare instances where sewing is actually way cheaper than buying the clothes new.

I made a sewing pattern that you can use at our sewing studio during our Sewcial or classes but if you’re sewing from home, mood fabrics has a very similar one.

And we have a variety of cotton knits if you prefer or if you’re looking for more compression I would suggest the heathered spandex knit.

6. Wrap Pants

These are really accessible for new sewist and they are very size inclusive because you can adjust them with the ties. They do take a great bit of fabric but they are perfect to throw over a swimsuit or for when you prefer a bit more coverage that is breathable.

There are a variety of video tutorials and free sewing tutorials for this project online as it is a classic! But mood fabrics of course has put it all in one place for us so I would start here.

I also would opt to make these pants out of linen because linen is so absorbent but quick drying which means it makes the best fabric for a beach cover up.

I hope this was helpful to inspire you to get some summer sewing done, and if you still need a little added motivation maybe I will see you at the Sewcial! I think I will probably start with another pair of shorts to get the ball rolling and see if I have the motivation to tackle a dress.

Denim has a long and rich history and is one of the most worn fabrics in the world, but for a lot of sewists we can tend to avoid it.  It is a thick and durable fabric that is mildly expensive, and is often used for very rugged clothes that require a lot of technical…
  • all about cotton gauze

In my constant search to understand how fabric and fashion has changed history I learned a bit about how integral cotton gauze was to the medical profession. The absorption was vital to bandaging people, and it’s a pretty great thing not to have your patient bleed out and to help them clot easier. Now it…

I actually wasn’t a fan of Linen when I first started sewing, I saw it as a rough fabric and I had no clue why there were so many people who preferred linen over all other fabrics.  But of course the more I learned about linens properties and the more I worked with it as…
